Getting as much practical experience as possible and researching where the industry is heading will help you keep one step ahead when beginning a career in construction. This approach has helped me grow and develop as an assistant construction manager at ISG.
I got into construction at an early age, working on site for the family business. This inspired me to take on an assistant management role with a larger company, before I enrolled on a Construction Project Management course at Northumbria University.
I first joined ISG on a placement during my sandwich year, where I worked on a Grade-II listed museum refurbishment in Birmingham. After university, I had the opportunity to return to ISG on their graduate programme, where I worked on the construction of a new leisure facility. I am now working on one of ISG’s largest projects, Project Mint, delivering 400,000 sq ft of new retail space inside the O2 in Greenwich.
I like that my role changes every day and from project-to-project. At Project Mint, I manage some important work packages, including the construction of a new main feature staircase area at the entrance of the new retail concourse, as well as the installation of 16 first-floor retail units. A highlight for me was handing over a new ticket office and merchandise spaces to the client with absolute completion.
The construction industry is going through exciting times. Technology such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) is helping pioneer how projects of today and tomorrow are designed, delivered and maintained. I researched this trend as part of my university dissertation, and was proud for it to be published by the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM).
Although ISG works across a breadth of projects and a range of sectors, you always feel part of the wider team. Last year, I had the surprise and elation of winning a never stop learning value award, which rewards outstanding commitment to ISG’s core values; dream smart, always care, speak frankly and never stop learning. It was great to be recognised by my peers at regional level and celebrate reaching the Global Value Awards final with the global leadership team. I’m already thinking about how I can win my next one!
